HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ – Hasbrouck Heights boys soccer head coach
Pedro Martinez knows that this year will be a “challenging one” for his
Aviators. His senior-laden team finished 9-8-1 a season ago, and he
returns only six players with varsity experience, three who started last
season.
“I expect to compete, and for our team to grow on the field throughout the season,” Martinez stated.
GOALKEEPER: One area Martinez can be thankful for experience is in
goal. Senior Michael Quimbayo saw plenty of time in a net a year ago as
a junior. His experience is going to need to come through for the
Aviators this year, as he is the only goalkeeper listed on the varsity
roster.
DEFENDERS: Oliver Fermin, an NJIC All Meadowlands Honorable Mention
selection on defense for the Aviators a season ago, returns to lead this
group. He scored three goals and one assist for Hasbrouck Heights a
season ago. Competing for playing time alongside him with be his brother
Derek, also a senior, and juniors Carlos Rodriguez and Kush Tailor.
The rest of the defender candidates are inexperienced. Sophomores
Johnathan Caceres, Aiden Vidal, will join freshmen Mike Duchi and Husam
Rajab in providing depth the position.
MIDFIELDERS: This is the position with
the most experience. Senior Michael McGurran had three goals for the
Aviators a year ago, while junior Joshua Valencia added two goals and an
assist in duty for the Aviators. They will be joined by junior
newcomers Jack Bruton and three sophomores. Chihiro Suenaga, Matthew
Murillo, Guiseppe Fattorusso and Sebastion Broncono. Freshmen Gianluca
Ciminata, Matthew and Dylan Fermin will provide depth and a look to the
future.
FORWARDS: Sophomore Evan Maloney returns having scored four goals as a
freshman. Seniors Juan Ruiz Castro and Jared Stavash will be battling
for time up front.
SCHEDULE: The NJIC re-alignment sends last year’s division champion,
North Arlington away, but perennial soccer power Wallington remains in
the revised Meadowlands Division. Becton, St. Mary (Ruth) and Wood-Ridge
remain as rivals, while Bergen Charter moves in. Saddle Brook,
Weehawken and Paterson Charter move to other divisions.
Martinez stated that this is the “toughest schedule in recent years.”
